Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University

The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at the Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, is one of the leading departments in geographic education in Egypt. The department stands out by offering a balanced blend of academic geographic knowledge and applied skills that meet the demands of the contemporary job market. Established to prepare distinguished graduates in the fields of physical, human, and economic geography, as well as cartography, surveying, environmental studies, and modern geographic technologies, the department has become one of the most prominent choices for students seeking academic and professional excellence. Additionally, the department offers a unique specialized program: Geomatics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The establishment of this department

The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was established in the academic year 1994/1995.

Our Mission

The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) aims to prepare distinguished graduates capable of meeting labor market needs in literary, human, and social fields at both the local and regional levels. It also seeks to conduct scientific research to enhance the department's contribution to sustainable community development.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities include positions in planning departments within governorates, mining and general contracting companies, real estate registration authorities, water and environmental resource agencies, the Meteorological Authority, the Transport Authority, and the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). Graduates can also work in GIS and statistical analysis, teaching surveying at the General Organization for Urban Planning and the Remote Sensing Authority, as well as roles in the Egyptian General Survey Authority, geological and military surveying, information and decision support centers, tourism sectors, and petroleum companies.

Our Strategic Objectives

Providing students with scientific training to enhance their academic development and improve their skills in the field of geography. Graduates will acquire various cognitive and practical skills, including proficiency in using computers and modern software for creating and producing different types of topographic maps.

Providing faculty members and their assistants with training in specialized programs, scientific courses, and workshops to enhance their expertise and expand their academic knowledge.

Meeting the needs of local institutions for specialists and qualified professionals capable of advancing the field of geography, enabling it to compete with both local and international institutions.

Participating in research projects that serve the environment and society, such as the Land Use Project in Helwan City, the Geography Curriculum Development Project at Helwan University faculties, the Tourist Map Project in Helwan City, and other major national projects.
