Message from the Head of the Department
The world is witnessing an unprecedented information and knowledge revolution, where data, information, and knowledge have become essential pillars and indispensable economic resources. As a result, the demand for well-qualified information and knowledge specialists has increased - professionals capable of managing and effectively utilizing these resources. The traditional perception of libraries and information institutions is no longer dominant, as their roles and services have evolved to meet the changing needs of users and the latest technological advancements.
This is where the Department of Libraries and Information at Helwan University plays a pivotal role. Most of our academic programs focus on applying modern technologies to information and knowledge management, equipping graduates with the skills needed to work in various local and regional information institutions. Our curriculum emphasizes technological competencies to meet labor market demands while fostering research innovation to address societal challenges.
Through our Master’s and PhD programs, we develop researchers’ academic and creative capabilities, further strengthening the role of scientific research in solving real-world problems. Our department boasts a distinguished faculty renowned for their academic expertise and professional field experience.
Since its establishment in 1995, these strengths have positioned the Department of Library and Information Science as a leading and distinguished institution both locally and regionally.
About the Department
The establishment of the Department of Libraries and Information at the Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, dates back to the founding of the faculty itself in 1995. The department began offering courses in the academic year 1995/1996, and the first graduating class completed their studies in the academic year 1998/1999.


The Mission
To contribute academically, professionally, and through research to the field of library and information science by preparing highly qualified graduates who can meet the needs of the job market locally, regionally, and internationally. The department also aims to develop graduates capable of continuous learning, creativity, and innovation in the field.
The Objectives
To introduce students to the library and information institutions at the national, regional, and international levels.
To equip students with the skills needed to work in various types of library and information institutions.
To develop students’ ability to use information technology tools that support library services.
To foster an understanding of the importance of library science and its role in advancing culture and societal development.
