The Establishment of the Department

The Faculty of Arts at Helwan University was founded in 1995, with academic programs commencing in the 1995/1996 academic year. The English Department was one of the first departments to be established.

Academic Standards of the Program

The program adopts the National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) for the Language and Translation Program in the English Department at the Faculty of Arts, Helwan University.

These standards were approved in the Department Council Meeting No. (351) on March 6, 2023.

Our Mission The Literature Section

The program aims to prepare distinguished graduates capable of meeting the demands of the labour market and serving the community’s institutions. In addition, the graduates are enabled to purse postgraduate programs at Egyptian, regional, and international universities. To achieve this objective, the program provides a supportive learning environment that fosters English language proficiency and understanding of English-speaking civilizations’ culture and literature. Furthermore, the study in the program hones scientific, critical, and research skills of the graduates. The program also promotes continuing self-directed learning to meet local and regional academic and research quality standards.

Our Mission Linguistics and Translation Section

The program aims to prepare highly distinguished graduates at the academic and research levels angling with local and regional standards. It provides a supportive learning environment that offers outstanding educational opportunities for mastering English language, English literature, and translation into Arabic. The program fosters academic distinction and qualifies students for postgraduate studies at Egyptian, regional, and international universities. Moreover, it provides exceptional career opportunities that meet labor market demands and contribute to community service.

Our Objectives The Literature Section

To enable proficiency in using the English language across the four core skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

To develop the ability to analyze language and understand different levels of meaning.

To explore the cultural, historical, and intellectual heritage of British and American civilizations across different historical periods.

To highlight literary texts from British and American cultures across different historical periods, including poetry, drama, novels, and essays, while connecting them to contemporary realities.

To clarify the intellectual ideologies and cultural movements of "the Other."

To introduce linguistic, literary, and critical theories and their relationship to Western literary texts.

To train students in translation skills for various types of texts.

To develop the ability to become a more active and effective member of society.

To equip students with the skills for free expression and constructive discussion.

To develop creative abilities, as well as logical analysis and critical thinking skills.

To strengthen proficiency in Arabic and the second language, along with their literature, to facilitate comparative analysis of literary texts from different languages.

To train students in conducting research and writing effective presentations using a scientific methodology, while utilizing computer science and online resources.

To integrate supporting humanities disciplines—such as history, psychology, sociology, ethics, and philosophy—with the specialized language to enhance the understanding of literary texts.
